Plan Notes

3/24/24 58-64 eg. today but warm in the sun. I made a new pea trellis out of stakes, bamboo poles and twine. Came out pretty good. I planted a bunch of stuff in an effort to be better at succession planting. Despite the cool temps and the rain my tomatoes are growing so fast I can practically see them grow! Same with yellow crookneck summer squash. The arugula seems to be bushier and bushier than ever- I will need to yank it soon and send it over for the tortoises across the street. I have about four younger arugula plants that are thriving and ready to give leaves. I also sprinkled everyone with nice organic compost. Followed by a good soak for all of those new seeds and to soak in the nutrients from the compost. Plants are happy today over here. Today I planted: *lavender *lime thyme *swiss chard - starts *sugar daddy snap peas on homemade trellis *sweet peas on new iron trellis *easter egg, cherry belle and purple radish *stock - seeds in the garden *beets - more seeds in as only a few sprouted from 2 weeks ago Also started seeds in peat pots to keep warm indoors: *queen lime zinnias *lettuce *purple carrots *Lesya mini red peppers *kohlrabi - about 1/2 did not germinate from 2 weeks ago *more honeynut squash- only 1/6 germinated from 2 weeks ago Basil starts are still shivering out there - some have died and some are hanging on; I'll wait to plant more until it is warmer. I ordered a very tall trellis (7-8 feet) for the squash to climb. In the past I have found honeynut squash to be prolific vines- extremely long. Hope this tall trellis works, I totally believe in the concept of vertical gardening! 6/23/24 I pulled the Dark Velvet night tomato as it was not ripening and also had lots of mold despite extensive pruning. My Sungold is fabulous but is done about 2/3 way to the top so I planted a new one to have later in the season. Also planted a Black Prince, Sweet Million and a PIneapple. The determinant Early Girl Bush and Tangerine are almost done so that will make more room for the new ones. The Granex onions are FABULOUS- the sweetest onions I have ever had. Wonderful with cucumber and dill /vinegar, as well as onion soup. Easy to eat raw they are so tender and sweet. Grew nice bulbs about 4-5 inches in diameter. I also added 3 more eggplant including a white one- so pretty, and some shishito peppers. My yellow crookneck grew up a stake verticallywhich was awesome, but was very disappointing bc I didn't have any male flowers so all fruits were small and didn't develop - bummer! I finally yanked it today and put in two new ones. I also planted a candy roaster - those HUGE squashes just for fun. The honeynut butternut tower of 5 plants is doing well- lots of fruit about 3-4 inches and growing so fast you can almost see them grow. Climbing rose is now at the top of the wall so I will try to coax it to the left down the wall- we'll see. Kale was finally done today- the tortoises across the street got lots! Swiss chard is very healthy and going strong- it is so pretty. I cut my lavender back very hard in April- it was so dried out and stiff. It recovered beautifully and now has gorgeous deep purple flowers and healthy soft green leaves- it came out really well! Lots of bees this year- they love the lavender and the Marjoram of all things!
